There are many funding opportunities available for Graduate and Professional School Students. Please check eligibility requirements: they vary by field of study, program type, and country.
Progam- or Country-Specific
- Program provider scholarships and discounts for University of Minnesota students
- Check with your home college or department, program provider, your particular foreign university or program, and country sources (such as DAAD for Germany, Nuffic for the Netherlands, JASSO for Japan, SIU for Norway, CIMO for Finland, US-Ireland Alliance, the British Council, StudyIndia, etc.)
- University of Minnesota financial aid may be available for study abroad (your FAFSA form has to be on file). If you are planning to complete your full degree program abroad, you may be eligible to apply for alternative educational loans via your local financial institution
- Some countries allow students to work while on a student visa. However, work abroad can often be hard to find, so you should not count on this as a secure means of income. Check your country’s immigration regulations by visiting the consular/visa section of their embassy website
Learning Abroad Center
- Learning Abroad Center's scholarship database provides information on funding offered through and outside of the university
- Students meeting the criteria for Privately Funded Scholarships are automatically considered for those awards as they apply for the regular LAC Study Abroad Scholarships
- Non-Credit Learning Abroad Fellowship for work, internship, or volunteer programs during summer 2009
Office of International Programs
- The Office for International Programs (OIP) provides information on funding for study, internships, and research abroad. You may also request a search through the OIP database for external funding sources to conduct research abroad
- China Center offers numerous funding resources for study and research in China
Graduate School and OVPR
- Graduate School Fellowships are offered through the Graduate School for study and research abroad. Search additional funding resource listings as well
- Office of the Vice President for Research offers a variety of tools and sources to help you find the right funding fit for research, artistic, and other scholarly activities
Minnesota Human Rights Center Fellowship Program
- Fellowship grants for Upper Midwest residents to undertake practical experience/internships in human rights organizations worldwide. It is designed to promote social justice by providing practical training.
Outside Funding Sources
- Search various databases for fellowships and external options. One example is IIEPassport
- Attend University library workshops on funding alert services and database search. These workshops help tackle the often daunting task of choosing the right funding sources and ensuring the “fundability” of your idea
- Utilize the Outside Funding Opportunity Chart provided by the Graduate School
