Visa Information

Passport
All students must have a passport that is valid for the duration of, as well as up to six months after the end of the program, in order to enter Australia.

If you do not have a passport, apply as soon as possible.


Visa Requirements for Semester Students

All semester participants are required to apply for a 676 Tourist visa online. This visa allows study in Australia for up to 12 weeks and visiting the country for up to 6 months. Students are not allowed to work for pay with this visa, but unpaid internships and volunteer work are permitted.

The following process pertains to US citizens; non-US citizens will need to contact the Australian Embassy for visa requirements.

Follow these steps to obtain your visa:

  1. Obtain your passport. The visa is linked electronically, you do not need to send your passport in.
  2. Complete the online visa application. Apply at least 4 weeks before departure.
  3. Pay the visa fee with your credit card, at the point of application (subject to change).
  4. Wait for electronic confirmation of your application.
  5. Keep a copy of your visa grant notification for US Immigration.
  6. Notify the Learning Abroad Center once you have applied for and received your visa.

Checking visa application status:

  • Go to the Australian Visa & Immigration web page
  • You need your transaction reference number, birth date, passport number, and country of passport (United States unless other).
  • Notification is via email when your visa has been granted. Once your visa has been granted, you must keep a copy of the email with your passport for US Immigration as your visa is electronically linked to your passport through Australian Immigration and not the US.

Visa Requirements for Summer Students

All summer participants are required to apply for a 976 Visitor ETA visa online. It is an electronically stored authority for travel to Australia. It allows you to stay up to 3 months. Applications for ETAs can be submitted through travel agents or airlines.

The following process pertains to US citizens; non-US citizens need to contact the Australian Embassy for visa requirements.

Follow these steps to obtain your visa:

  1. Obtain your passport. The visa is linked electronically, you do not need to send your passport in.
  2. Complete the online visa application. Apply at least 4 weeks before departure.
  3. Pay the ETA fee with your credit card, at the point of application (subject to change).
  4. Wait for electronic confirmation of your application; check your status within 12 hours of application.
  5. Notify the Learning Abroad Center once you have applied for and received your visa.
