Earn Credit
Home > Academic Planning

You are awarded academic credit for successful participation in any of the programs listed in the Learning Abroad Center catalog. This credit may be in the form of either resident or transfer credit, depending on the program you choose. See page 9 of the Advising Handbook for more information.

If you select a program where you earn transfer credit, it is important to check on possible transfer credit limits or restrictions with your departmental and college advisers if you have already transferred a large number of credits to the University of Minnesota from another institution, or if you plan on using study abroad credits to fulfill major or minor requirements.

You may earn transfer credit for some study abroad programs not listed in the Study Abroad Catalog; others do NOT award academic credit. If you choose a non-credit program, credit may sometimes be obtained through credit by exam or directed study. Detailed planning is essential if you are considering either option. Be sure to discuss it with both your departmental and college advisers, as well as a Learning Abroad Center adviser. Financial aid may not be used for non-credit study abroad.
