Site Visit to France
October, 2003*

Montpellier (Learning Abroad Center)
Students choose classes intended to strengthen French language proficiency at the Institute for Foreign Studies or classes at the Université Paul Valéry. This site offers students many options, including courses from across the curriculum of a large university, specialized courses for American students, academic internships, organized excursions, and a variety of housing options.

Area Studies in Paris (IES)
Students combine special French language courses, program courses, and regular university courses in the French capital. The program courses focus on a broad range of disciplines with a special academic focus on the Francophone world. Internships are available at leading French businesses, organizations, and schools.

Contemporary French and Critical Studies in Paris (CIEE)
This study center in Paris offers students with one semester of French the opportunity to improve their language while taking area studies courses in English on the Contemporary French program. The Critical Studies program at the same center allows students with advanced language skills the option to enroll at the University of Paris III-Sorbonne Nouvelle as well as take specially designed courses that focus on a critical approach to current French thought in fields such as literature, film, philosophy, and aesthetics.

Site Visit to Spain
October, 2003*

Language and Culture in Toledo (Learning Abroad Center)
Global Campus manages this program in collaboration with the UMTC Spanish and Portuguese Department and the prestigious José Ortega y Gasset Foundation. Based in the walled city of Toledo, the program offers Spanish language, humanities, social science, and arts courses. A variety of internships are available. Students study at San Juan de la Penitencia, a converted 16th century convent. Students can choose to either live in the Penitencia or do a homestay.

Programs in Madrid (ISEP) and Alcala de Henares (CIEE)
Students may enroll at several universities in the Madrid area and attend regular classes along with Spanish students. Students are afforded a high degree of independence and immersion into Spanish academic and cultural life and have the possibility of family homestays.

Area Studies in Barcelona (IES)
Students discover Barcelona’s mix of tradition, style, and culture through a program that combines Spanish language courses with courses in business, humanities, and social sciences taught in English. Students with advanced Spanish skills may also enroll in the University of Barcelona or the Pompeu Fabra University for Business and Economics. A variety of internships are available.

Site Visit to Costa Rica
February, 2004*

Integrated Studies in San José (KU)
Students explore the culture of a nation that abolished its army in 1948, helped develop the concept of “eco-tourism,” and is famous for its protected and extremely diverse rainforests. Students take a month-long orientation course followed by regular classes at the University of Costa Rica.

Exchange in Heredia, Costa Rica (ISEP)
Students enroll in classes at the Universidad Nacional de Heredia in this affordable exchange program that provides a high level of independence and immersion. Curricula such as fine arts, history, international relations, as well as Latin American studies and literature are particularly strong.

Ecology of the Rainforest in Monteverde (CIEE)
Students gain hands-on tropical biology experience in this field study and conservation program based at Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve. This program incorporates biology and ecology courses with English instruction, a rural family homestay, and a Spanish language course.
