Site Visit to Argentina

Language & Culture in Buenos Aires (Website)

This Language & Culture program in Buenos Aires is offered jointly by the Fundación Jose Ortega y Gasset and the Learning Abroad Center. Located in the heart of downtown Buenos Aires, the Fundación is in one of Argentina's most elegant and prestigious buildings. Students learn and experience the Spanish language as well as global and cultural issues. A diverse faculty brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to the classroom. Extracurricular activities—sampling food, reading literature, and experiencing music and dance—increase students' understanding of Argentine culture.

The CIEE Study Center in Argentina, established in 1993, includes specialized courses at FLACSO and regular courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires (UBA). This arrangement allows CIEE students to combine the specialized, more personalized “think tank” atmosphere of FLACSO, with the vibrant Argentine university life of UBA. Given the acknowledged excellence of the faculty and wide range of course offerings at these institutions, the CIEE program is suitable for undergraduate students with strong language skills. All courses are taught in Spanish.

CDS Argentina (Website)
Interning through CDS is a great opportunity for students to strengthen their Spanish skills while gaining professional experience in their field of study. CDS offers unpaid internships in a variety of fields, including business/ finance, hotel management/ tourism, computer science, engineering, and as well as others. CDS will try to find placements outside of these fields but cannot guarantee them. Interns are placed in either Buenos Aires or Cordoba. Placements range from working with small, family-owned businesses to interning with large multinational companies. The three month program starts at the beginning of each month. Students can choose to intern the entire three months or enroll in a one month Spanish language course followed by a two month internship.

The IES Buenos Aires Center is located in downtown Buenos Aires and houses staff offices, a student lounge, a small reference library, and a computer lab. IES Buenos Aires offers semester or academic-year programs geared to the student's level of language proficiency. Students can combine intensive language study at the beginning, intermediate, and advanced levels with area studies courses in international business, the arts, and social sciences in the beginning/intermediate program. Students with advanced language skills must take courses at the Universidad de Buenos Aires. Students with a 3.2 GPA are eligible for the advanced Spanish honors program at Universidad Torcuato di Tella. Internships offered in business, education, and the arts. Students completing a teaching internship receive ESL certification. Instruction is in Spanish and English by Argentine faculty.

Butler University Study in Argentina (Website)

Butler's semester and year programs feature outstanding academics in five universities, and a summer program in Buenos Aires, allowing students to experience the richness of Argentine culture while enhancing their Spanish skills. Students combine intensive language and culture courses, university courses, and specially designed program courses. They can choose to study in elegant Buenos Aires, which offers the best of big-city living, or pastoral Mendoza, a more tranquil location that nevertheless features its fair share of cultural activities and nightlife.

IES Italy Milan Program (Website)
The IES Milan program is the only American study abroad program in the city. It offers a wide range of courses through the IES Center and partner universities, and truly exceptional opportunities to concentrate in Music, Business, and Design. Numerous field study options are built into IES courses. Students can enroll in Italian language courses plus area studies courses taught in English for beginning and intermediate students, or in Italian for advanced students. Academic year and spring semester students with sufficient Italian may take regular courses at IULM and/or Universitá Cattolica del Sacro Cuore. Music instruction is available at the Civica Scuola di Musica, the Conservatorio G. Verdi, and others. Semester students can take marketing and business courses in English at Universitá Bocconi. During the summer, students take Italian language and an English-taught area studies course. Internships are available in psychology, banking, and marketing. Instruction is in Italian and English.

Bologna Cooperative Studies Program (Website)

The University of Bologna (UB) is Europe's oldest university and Italy's most prestigious. The Bologna Cooperative Studies Program supplements UB courses with courses designed for US students in Italian literature, art history, film studies, and current politics. A pre-session course strengthens students' language skills before UB classes begin. Instruction is in Italian. Bologna is a beautiful city and major academic center, just hours from Florence, Milan, Venice, and Rome.

The Arcadia program in Florence is located in the center of the city.   The Accademia Italiana in Florence is one of Europe's most respected institutes for studio art, fashion, and design. The regions around Florence are filled with historic sites, stunning renaissance art, and excellent cuisine. Italian language is a required component of the program.

Study Abroad in Florence—Learning Abroad Center (Website) & CAPA (Website)
This program is designed for students who have had little or no previous study of the Italian language. Students take classes in art, language, and culture in a 15th Century palazzo adorned with murals and statues. Just steps from Santa Croce and a short walk to the Duomo, the Uffizi Gallery, and Ponte Vecchio, the resources of the city enrich their studies. Florence's central location makes it easy to explore the surrounding area, as well as the rest of Italy and Europe.

IES Tokyo (Website)
Kanda University

Students combine Japanese language and culture coursework at Kanda University for International Studies or Meikai University and participate in an optional field placement. This multidisciplinary program offers students with little or no Japanese language background an opportunity to supplement language and Japanese studies courses with extensive field experience, including field trips, cultural events, and a field placement in their academic discipline as a participant/observer with a Japanese organization. Instruction is in English; no prior Japanese is required. Students can enroll in a combination of Japanese language courses and area studies courses in art, political science, anthropology, history, economics, international business, art, architecture, and sociology at Kanda University for International Studies or Meikai University.

Sophia University

Based at Sophia University since 1998, the CIEE program provides students with a supportive environment in which to study at one of Japan's top-ranked universities and experience life in Tokyo. While its participants enroll in Sophia University courses alongside Japanese and international students, CIEE resident staff organize a special orientation, home stays with Japanese families, a core course which includes guided field trips and cultural activities designed to introduce different facets of Japanese society, and an optional language pre-session. Students choose from a wide variety of courses taught in English. All students must enroll in the required core course, Japan: Facing the New Millennium, and are required to take a Japanese language class. Most students enroll in the regular Japanese Language program (4 credits), while others opt to enter the Japanese Language Intensive Program (8 credits). Students are also encouraged to enroll in at least one course offering a distinctive Japanese perspective in their area of interest.

Students attend classes at the Ichigaya campus of Sophia University, one of the best known private universities in Japan, just 20 minutes from central Tokyo. This bilateral exchange provides an affordable study abroad option featuring complete immersion at a Japanese University specifically selected to meet the needs of University of Minnesota students. Sophia University has staff available to provide orientation, on-site support, and advising to help students adjust to a new educational system and integrate into campus life. Courses are available in comparative culture, Japanese language and studies, business, economics, geography, history, international relations, literature, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology. Some classes are taught in English and Japanese by Sophia University faculty and are designed specifically for US and other international students. Regular Sophia university classes are available for students who have very advanced Japanese language skills.

This bilateral exchange provides an affordable study abroad option featuring complete immersion at a Japanese university specifically selected to meet the needs of University of Minnesota students. Students study at the University of Hiroshima's spacious campus, located 30 minutes outside of central Hiroshima. They may enroll in a wide variety of classes in English and Japanese. Typical course offerings in English include education, economics, Japanese culture, linguistics, literature, and psychology. Japanese language and culture courses are focused specifically on Japanese language, culture, and society and are taught in Japanese. Beginning, intermediate, and advanced Japanese courses are offered. Students who are extremely proficient in Japanese may enroll in regular Hiroshima University courses.

UMM Exchange in Osaka (Website)

In this exchange, students study Japanese culture and language at Kansai Gaidai University in Osaka, the second largest city in Japan and an important trading center. Students may choose four courses from the Japanese language program, or courses in the humanities, social sciences, and business. Instruction is in English by Japanese faculty.

This program provides a deep understanding of contemporary Scandinavia as a complex, progressive society with arguably the most comprehensive systems of social protection in the world. Three integrated seminars give students an understanding of the challenges and opportunities for the Scandinavian welfare states in an age of globalization and mass immigration. The program also explores the relationship between Scandinavian countries, the European Union, and other global powers such the United States. Classes are held on the University of Oslo campus, with comparative field study in selected regions of Norway, Sweden, and Denmark. The option of Norwegian language study offers another opportunity to gain an insight into the local culture. Internship options include (but are not limited to): The Oslo Red Cross, FRIGO Outdoor Education in old Oslo, and Friends of Earth Norway.

With approximately 30,000 students, the University of Oslo is Norway's largest and oldest university. It is a comprehensive university, with faculties of theology, law, medicine, humanities, mathematics and natural sciences, dentistry, social sciences, and education. The university excels in research, and four researchers have won Nobel prizes. Oslo is a vibrant city surrounded by fjords, lakes, and forests. It also has a mix of old and new architecture, museums, parks, hills, and offers a variety of cultural, shopping, and sporting activities. Bilateral exchanges provide an affordable study abroad option for students who desire complete immersion at academic institutions specifically selected to meet the needs of University of Minnesota students.

UMD Exchange in Sweden (Website)
Luleå Technical University

The University of Minnesota Duluth has reciprocal exchanges with six universities in Sweden and one university in Finland. Only University of Minnesota students can participate in a reciprocal exchange. During the site visit, we will go to Luleå Technical University and Växjö University . Luleå Technical University offers numerous courses in technology and engineering, but also has a wide variety of other courses in English. It is located in northern Sweden on the Gulf of Bothnia. Warm Atlantic currents keep this northern city warmer than you would expect. Växjö University has about 10,000 students and is known for its business school, but also has courses in the sciences, social sciences, humanities, and education. It is located in the City of Växjö in south central Sweden in the "Kingdom of Crystal" where much of the world-renowned Swedish glass is made.
