Programs with No Existing Relationship with the
University of Minnesota Learning Abroad Center
University of Minnesota students may choose any accredited study abroad program. The following guidelines must be met to maintain student status and gain access to financial aid:
- The student must receive an official transcript from an accredited institution where the credit appears as home school credit upon completion of the program. Credit is then reviewed by the Office of Admissions and posted to the student’s University of Minnesota transcript as transfer credit.
- The student must complete the Outside Program application and pay a $100 fee. As part of the application, students are required to purchase international health insurance from the approved University of Minnesota provider. The University of Minnesota will not waive this insurance requirement.
- Students interested in studying in countries with state department warnings must abide by strict policies. Students will need to meet with an Outside Program adviser.
For complete information about the student process and application details go to the Outside Program web site.
Recruitment Policy
Program providers with no official relationship to the University of Minnesota may not promote their programs on the University of Minnesota campus without cosponsorship or prior approval from the Learning Abroad Center. On-campus promotion includes tabling, classroom visits, faculty meetings, placing posters on bulletin boards and handing out printed materials on campus.
Program representatives are encouraged to follow the marketing best practices guidelines on the NAFSA web site.
Learning Abroad Fair Policy
Only University of Minnesota cosponsored programs are invited to education abroad fairs. Exceptions may be made in cases where there is strong college support of a particular program. Contact Antonia Lortis with questions.
Process for Co-Sponsorship
For information about Outside Programs in the Learning Abroad Center, contact the Associate Advising Director at 612.626.9000 to discuss your programs. The Associate Advising Director will talk with you about the possibility of putting the program through a review process. The University of Minnesota works with over 300 programs in 70 different countries. Given our strong variety in global location, academics, and program types, it is uncommon to have a program reviewed upon request. Additionally, the review process may take a full year.
