Study Abroad Cost Estimate (SACE) for Sponsored/Custom/Exchange Progams
Home > Financial Resources > Financial Aid

University of Minnesota-Twin Cities students who wish to use financial aid (loans and grants) must email sace@umn.edu to request an official Study Abroad Cost Estimate (SACE).  Allow 7-10 business days to receive your SACE.

In your email message, include the following:

  • Full name
  • Student ID number
  • Study abroad program, country/city, and host university (if applicable)
  • Term you will be abroad
  • Housing option (if applicable)
  • Approximate date you paid your confirmation deposit
  • Whether you are a graduate or undergraduate student

You must be accepted by your program and have paid your confirmation deposit to the Learning Abroad Center before you can obtain a SACE. This deposit is due before financial aid is released and may not be deferred.

You are strongly encouraged to schedule a Financial Aid Preview Meeting prior to requesting a SACE. This meeting will give you a sense of your aid eligibility before you pay any non-refundable deposits or fees.

After you receive the SACE, you will need to sign and submit it to the Office of Student Finance in Fraser Hall. If you have already had a Financial Aid Preview Meeting, you do not need another appointment to submit your SACE. Refer to the Registration and Financial Aid checklist for more details on the financial aid process.

Note that this process is only for students on Learning Abroad Center-sponsored, exchange, departmental and custom programs. If you are participating on a cosponsored program (CIEE, IFSA-Butler, IES, Arcadia, etc.) or a University of Minnesota Crookston, Duluth, or Morris program, please review the instructions for obtaining a SACE for cosponsored programs.

Students on the University of Minnesota Crookston, Duluth, and Morris campuses should consult with their home campus study abroad office regarding financial aid, registration, and billing, and should read the University of Minnesota System Registration and Billing web page.
