There are many funding opportunities available for Graduate and Professional School Students. Please check eligibility requirements: they vary by field of study, program type, and country.

Progam- or Country-Specific

  • Program provider scholarships and discounts for University of Minnesota students
  • Check with your home college or department, program provider, your particular foreign university or program, and country sources (such as DAAD for Germany, Nuffic for the Netherlands, JASSO for Japan, SIU for Norway, CIMO for Finland, US-Ireland Alliance, the British Council, StudyIndia, etc.)
  • University of Minnesota financial aid may be available for study abroad (your FAFSA form has to be on file). If you are planning to complete your full degree program abroad, you may be eligible to apply for alternative educational loans via your local financial institution
  • Some countries allow students to work while on a student visa. However, work abroad can often be hard to find, so you should not count on this as a secure means of income. Check your country’s immigration regulations by visiting the consular/visa section of their embassy website

Minnesota Human Rights Center Fellowship Program

  • Fellowship grants for Upper Midwest residents to undertake practical experience/internships in human rights organizations worldwide. It is designed to promote social justice by providing practical training.

Outside Funding Sources

  • Search various databases for fellowships and external options. One example is IIEPassport
  • Attend University library workshops on funding alert services and database search. These workshops help tackle the often daunting task of choosing the right funding sources and ensuring the “fundability” of your idea
  • Utilize the Outside Funding Opportunity Chart provided by the Graduate School
