Guiding Principles for Petitions which Require
College/Learning Abroad Center Consultation
- Collaboration between the college advising office and the Learning Abroad Center establishes a student-friendly process.
- Consultation between the college advising office and the Learning Abroad Center is crucial to making an appropriate decision. The Learning Abroad Center knows the study abroad context and can gather information from appropriate staff abroad. The college knows the context of the student’s degree progress and requirements.
- Petitions or inquiries must relate to coursework taken during the study abroad term(s). Study abroad students with questions relating to coursework taken at the U of M before or after the study abroad term(s) work solely with the college office.
- Another university’s or study abroad provider’s policy may apply in addition to University of Minnesota policy. For example, some universities overseas offer a three week cancel/add period. The Learning Abroad Center articulates the rationale of those policies to the college adviser and the student. In the event a study abroad provider or host-university policy is not clearly defined, University of Minnesota/Learning Abroad Center policy supercedes the overseas policy.
- The adviser who is approached first (whether in the college or in the Learning Abroad Center) explores the issue with the student rather than referring student to the partner office. Appropriate contact notes are kept for each step of the process.
-
College advisers may contact Jodi Malmgren in the Learning Abroad Center at 612-626-7678 or jodim@umn.edu to discuss student petitions.
