Many people make the mistake of assuming their existing health insurance covers them wherever they go, when many times it in fact does not cover a person outside of their home country.
For anyone not covered by CISI international health insurance or University of Minnesota health insurance, the Learning Abroad Center has available for purchase a comprehensive medical insurance policy for international travel. This insurance is available for students and non-students.
While reviewing travel insurance coverage, you may want to consider these questions.
NOTE: If you are participating in a learning abroad opportunity, do NOT purchase International Travel insurance. The University of Minnesota (all campuses) requires mandatory international health insurance provided through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) for learning abroad opportunities for most students learning abroad on the following types of programs:
- University of Minnesota sponsored and cosponsored programs
- outside programs
- WIV (work, internship, volunteer) opportunities
- directed and/or independent study
The cost of this insurance is either included in the program fee or assessed to the student.
University of Minnesota faculty, graduate students and staff enrolled in the University of Minnesota Health Plan have Medex coverage and are not required to purchase additional international insurance.
