Application Checklist

Follow this checklist to apply for the program.

Apply by the Application Deadline. It is recommended that you apply early; complete applications are reviewed as they are submitted.

Print and submit the following pieces to the Learning Abroad Center (map):

    On the top portion of the form, please indicate the following to help us identify your program:

    Program Name: American University Cairo (AUC)
    Sponsor: AUC
    Program Track/Host Institution: Please indicate whether you are applying for the Intensive Arabic program at the Arabic Language Institute or the Standard Study Abroad Program.

  • College Transcript
    Submit an official or unofficial copy of your college transcript from each institution you have attended or are currently attending.

Complete and submit the following pieces to the American University in Cairo's (AUC) New York office:

  • American University in Cairo application
    Please note there are separate applications for the Standard Study Abroad program, Arabic Language Institute (ALI) and the summer session.
    • You may either use the online application submission process, or print out the PDF form, complete the application, and mail the printed application to AUC's New York office.
    • For question #1 of section IV Financial Information of the Study Abroad and Summer (Standard Program) applications: 
      • Write "Learning Abroad Center, University of Minnesota" in the first blank.
      • List "Sarah Tschida, Associate Program Director," as your study abroad adviser or contact name, even if you are a Crookston, Duluth, or Morris student. Sarah's contact information is located at the top of this page.
    • On the Arabic Language Institute (Intensive Arabic) application, in section IV Sponsor Information:
      • List the "Learning Abroad Center, University of Minnesota" as the sponsoring organization
      • List "Sarah Tschida" as the contact name.
      • Check "yes" for the billing question.
      • Note that you do not need to attach a sponsor confirmation
  • Passport photos, Official Transcripts, Essays, Course Study Plan, Additional Forms
    Refer to American University in Cairo's application checklist to make sure you are enclosing all necessary materials in your application to the New York office. This may include passport photos, transcripts, and essays, and the international student data form. Each program application has a different checklist, depending on which term and track you are applying for. Refer to American University in Cairo's website for more information about course offerings to complete the course study plan section.
  • Reference Forms
    The Reference Forms/Recommendation Letters should be from college level advisers, professors, or TA's with whom you have taken a class. You may also include a recommendation from an employer. At least one should be from an instructor in an area related to your proposed studies in Egypt. ALI and standard summer program applicants may submit the reference forms (found in the standard Study Abroad semester program application) in place of the recommendation letters.

  • Copy of Valid Passport
    If you do not yet have a passport, you must apply for it before completing AUC's application.

Eligibility Requirements
This program is only open to degree-seeking University of Minnesota students. Students meeting the criteria below are qualified to apply for this program:

GPA

ALI: above 2.5

Standard Study Abroad: 3.0

Class Standing Sophomores and above
Other Admission to the program is selective.*  Preference is given to students with a strong academic record and a demonstrated interest in the Middle East.

*Due to the competitive nature of the program, it is recommended to apply early and have a second program choice for studying abroad.

*Early application is strongly recommended for both the Arabic Language Institute (ALI) and the Standard Study Abroad program. The Arabic Language Institute track will likely fill several months before the deadline.

Note: University of Minnesota students must complete and submit all application materials to American University in Cairo and Learning Abroad Center by the above deadlines. This program may fill before the deadline.

Next Steps

Here's what to expect after submitting your application to the Learning Abroad Center:

  1. The Learning Abroad Center sends an email notification to confirm your application has been received.
  2. The Learning Abroad Center emails you to request any missing items if your application is incomplete.
  3. Once the Learning Abroad Center has reviewed your completed application, we email you with your status. This email contains important instructions to follow after you have received your acceptance notice from your university/co-sponsor.
  4. The university/co-sponsor emails you with a final decision regarding your acceptance into the program. This can take a week to several months.
  5. If accepted, follow the instructions outlined in the Learning Abroad Center email referred to in Step #3. You need to pay a program deposit to the Learning Abroad Center. (Do not pay a deposit to your university/co-sponsor.)
  6. Submit additional information and materials if requested by the university/co-sponsor.
  7. If you choose not to participate in the program, email your Learning Abroad Center program contact and your university/co-sponsor contact.
