Take an integrated approach to learning and community involvement by being active in service while reflecting upon the complexities and challenges facing Cape Town specifically and South Africa generally. Designed to meet the needs of local communities and help foster civic responsibility, this service-learning program offers you a rigorous academic program of language study, social research methodology, African studies, and independent research. Participate in cultural and educational activities such as visits to local theater, music, and dance productions, museums, and rural cooperatives.
Curriculum
All students enroll in the two-part core course, participate in a service placement, choose to study either Xhosa or Afrikaans language, and complete their studies with a capstone project. Taking the language and core course with other South African and University of Cape Town students offer you additional opportunities to integrate into the local culture.
Instruction in English by University of Cape Town faculty. Typical credits:
15 for fall or spring semester.
Eligibility & Application
Open to U of M juniors and above with a 3.0 GPA. Applicants must also have demonstrated experience in community service or volunteerism and the ability to perform independent research. Application deadline for fall semester/academic year is March 15; spring semester is October 15.

Estimated Cost Students from the University of Minnesota participating
on this program are charged a program fee that is inclusive of the cosponsored
program's fee and a University of Minnesota fee to cover the cost of application
processing, advising services, orientation, course registration, grade transfer
and posting for resident credit, assistance with financial aid, and international
health insurance. This administrative fee ranges from $500 to $1,500 and varies
by program. The cosponsored program's portion of the program fee can be used to
assist in estimating cost and is available at the program site linked below. In
most cases, airfare, field trips, meals, and personal expenses are additional.
