Description
Experience an intense three-week design immersion in Istanbul. This program investigates issues of tradition and modernity through a series of drawing, photographic, and representational exercises. These are aimed at exploring cultural, religious, and historical phenomena and questions of identity and belonging in architecture. The course is a field curriculum, with students engaging the city and its populace daily.

Curriculum
This program is taught as a series of design and history/culture workshops in the city. There is a strong independent focus, paired with daily meetings and public review sessions. A strong effort is made to leverage local professionals, academics, and visiting professors from the University of Minnesota as well as visiting critics. The core of the program is a three-week intensive course of study in Istanbul, with a week long travel/component along the Aegean Coast to investigate ancient roman cities and World Heritage Sites. The course is taught in english and is 3 credits.

Eligibility & Application

Open to University of Minnesota College of Design graduate students and upper-division undergraduates. Students are encouraged to have some drawing and history course experience. Interviews are held in January to determine eligibility.

Estimated Cost
The program fee includes tuition, housing, registration fees, some excursions, and international health travel insurance. A small allowance has been included for some meals.
