Print and submit the following pieces to the Learning Abroad Center (map):

  • Print and Submit: Application Checklist
  • Learning Abroad Application
    On the top portion of the form, please indicate the following to help us identify your program:

    Program Name: Dakar Summer Program or Graz Summer Program
    Sponsor: IU
    Program Track/Host Institution: Leave blank
  • College Transcript
    Submit an unofficial copy of your college transcript from each institution you have attended or are currently attending.

Complete and submit the following pieces to Indiana University:

  • Indiana University Application to Study Abroad

  • Two Passport Photos
    Please write your name on the back of each photo.

  • 2 Copies of Personal Essay
    See Indiana University Application for instructions.

  • Letter of Recommendation

  • College Transcript(s)
    Submit one official and one unofficial copy of your transcript from each college or university you have attended.

  • Indiana University Agreement and Release Form

  • Letter of Introduction to your Austrian host family
    The letter should be 300 words in length and should describe your own family, your interests, hobbies, summer plans, etc. This letter is not a test of your German language skill. It will be sent to the Austrian family with whom you will live.

Please note that the instructions in this letter apply only to the two Indiana University program cosponsored by the University of Minnesota: Summer German Studies in Graz and the Dakar Program. (Other Indiana University programs are open only to Indiana University students, for which you would need to see a Learning Abroad Center adviser and then apply directly to Indiana University).

Eligibility Requirements
This program is open to all individuals. Eligibility does not require student or University of Minnesota status. Students meeting the listed criteria are qualified to apply for this program.

Application Deadlines


Submit complete applications to the Learning Abroad Center according to the appropriate deadline:

Term Deadline*
German Studies in Graz (Summer) January 15
Dakar Summer Program January 15

*If the deadline falls on a weekend, submit your materials on the following business day.

Next Steps

Here's what to expect after submitting your application to the Learning Abroad Center:

  1. The Learning Abroad Center sends an email notification to confirm your application has been received.
  2. The Learning Abroad Center emails you to request any missing items if your application is incomplete.
  3. Once the Learning Abroad Center has reviewed your completed application, we will email you with your status. This email will contain important instructions to follow after you have received your acceptance notice from your university/co-sponsor.
  4. The university/co-sponsor emails you with a final decision regarding your acceptance into the program. This can take a week to several months.
  5. If accepted, follow the instructions outlined in the Learning Abroad Center email referred to in Step #3. You need to pay a program deposit to the Learning Abroad Center. (Do not pay a deposit to your university/co-sponsor.)
  6. Submit additional information and materials if requested by the university/co-sponsor.
  7. If you choose not to participate in the program, email your Learning Abroad Center program contact and your university/co-sponsor contact.

Program Fees

Students participating on co-sponsored programs are charged a program fee which is inclusive of the co-sponsor's program fee, University of Minnesota educational costs, and international health insurance. University of Minnesota educational costs cover application processing, advising servies, orientation, course registration, grade transfer and posting for credit as well as assistance with financial aid when applicable. Based on these additional services and benefits, the overall program fee will be higher than the co-sponsor's published program fee.
