Pre-Departure Checklist
Follow this checklist to plan for your departure.

Apply for your passport if you have not done so yet.

Apply for your student visa. Check with your program provider for further information.

Plan to attend the mandatory Pre-Departure Orientation.

Review and complete the instructions on the Financial Aid Checklist at least two months prior to your departure. You will not be able to access financial aid for study abroad unless these steps have been completed (U of M-Twin Cities students only).

Apply for University of Minnesota Study Abroad Scholarships (U of M-Twin Cities students only) and external scholarships for study abroad (all students).

Register for placeholder credits via U of M OneStop in order to maintain your U of M student status and allow student aid to be released (if applicable). You will receive registration instructions specific to your program via email from the Learning Abroad Center near the opening of the U of M registration queues (U of M-Twin Cities students only).

Wait for the Learning Abroad Center to register you for your study abroad credits in the U of M system (Non-U of M and U of M Crookston, Duluth, and Morris students).

Complete a Student Information Release Authorization: to grant your contact person access to discuss your student academic, billing, and financial record with a OneStop counselor. The information shared through this release only covers what is in your OneStop account.

Grant Parent/Guest Access to allow your contact person view-only access to your online student academic, billing, and financial aid information. Be aware that granting this access does not allow your contact person access to discuss your record with University of Minnesota and study abroad program provider advisers or staff, and that a Power of Attorney is recommended for this purpose.

Book your flight. Check with your program provider for group flight information or visit Travel Resources to purchase a ticket on your own.

Read the Know-Before-You-Go Guide.

Check out Travel Services and Products.

Obtain your International Student Identity Card (optional).

Enter your information into the "Pack your Electronic Suitcase" and "In Case of Emergency (ICE)" parts of University of Minnesota's Electronic Portfolio.

U of M Crookston, Duluth, and Morris students: review Registration and Billing instructions to access your financial aid.

Pack your suitcase, bring your program information, emergency card, insurance information, and get on the plane.
