Application Checklist

Follow this checklist to apply for the program.

Print and submit the following pieces to the Learning Abroad Center (map):

  • Print and Submit: Application Checklist
  • Learning Abroad Application

    On the top portion of the form, indicate the following to help us identify your program:

    Program Name: University Study in (Country)

    Sponsor: IFSA-Butler

    Program Track/Host Institution: State the College or Faculty where you plan to take classes (e.g. Faculty of Arts, Faculty of Science, etc.)/ state the University you are attending (e.g. University College Dublin, Stirling University, etc.).

  • Current Unofficial Transcript
    Submit an unofficial copy from each college or university you have attended.
Complete and submit the following pieces to Butler:

  • IFSA-Butler Application
    Butler application materials are available at Butler's application website. You can complete and submit your application online or by mail. You may mail the Butler Scholarship application separately from your program application. It is your responsibility to remain in contact with Butler to be certain that your application is complete by the application deadline.

  • Program Approval Form (2 pages)
    Fill out the front portion of this form. The second page, requesting approval from someone at your home institution, does not need to be completed, regardless of what Butler materials may indicate. Send both pages to IFSA-Butler. The Learning Abroad Center will be in contact with IFSA-Butler by email once about approval after you have handed in the U of M application and unofficial transcript (as stated above).

  • College Transcript
    Submit an official copy from each college or university you have attended.

  • Passport Photos
    Photos should be 2 inch by 2 inch black and white or color (refer to the IFSA-Butler application for the number of required photographs; please print your first and last name on the back of each photo).

  • Application Fee
    $40 non-refundable application fee (make checks payable to IFSA-Butler University; credit cards are not accepted)
  • Scholarship Application (optional)
    To answer the question about study abroad fees, put: $500–$1000. To answer the question about whose fees you are charged, put: IFSA-Bulter fees. The rest of the form needs to be filled out and signed by a financial aid adviser. You can go to One Stop for assistance.

Applicants for programs in Australia and England may want to consider reviewing the Learning Abroad Center’s own University Study in Australia and University Study in the UK programs before applying to a cosponsored program.

Eligibility Requirements
This program is open to University of Minnesota students that meet the criteria outlined by IFSA-Butler.

Application Deadlines


Submit complete applications to the Learning Abroad Center according to the appropriate deadline:

Next Steps

Here's what to expect after submitting your application to the Learning Abroad Center:

  1. The Learning Abroad Center sends an email notification to confirm your application has been received.
  2. The Learning Abroad Center emails you to request any missing items if your application is incomplete.
  3. Once the Learning Abroad Center has reviewed your completed application, we will email you with your status. This email will contain important instructions to follow after you have received your acceptance notice from your university/co-sponsor.
  4. The university/co-sponsor emails you with a final decision regarding your acceptance into the program. This can take a week to several months.
  5. If accepted, follow the instructions outlined in the Learning Abroad Center email referred to in Step #3. You need to pay a program deposit to the Learning Abroad Center. (Do not pay a deposit to your university/co-sponsor.)
  6. Submit additional information and materials if requested by the university/co-sponsor.
  7. If you choose not to participate in the program, email your Learning Abroad Center program contact and your university/co-sponsor contact.

University of Minnesota Program Fee
Students participating on cosponsored programs are charged a University of Minnesota program fee which is inclusive of the cosponsor’s program fee, the University of Minnesota fee, and international health insurance. Based on these additional services and benefits, the fee is higher than the program sponsor’s published fee. The University of Minnesota fee covers the cost of application processing, advising services, orientation, course registration, grade transfer and posting for residence credit, and assistance with financial aid when applicable.
