Description
Live in Salvador da Bahia, the center of Afro-Brazilian culture. The Salvador da Bahia program offers extensive cultural activities and field visits
as well as studying directly at the university with Brazilian students.
Curriculum
Begin the semester or year program with a five
week intensive language and culture study. For the remainder of
the term, students take a required Portuguese language course and, one of the three CIEE study center courses, and 2-3 elective courses chosen from CIEE electives and Universidade Católica do Salvador courses. The
summer program includes a language and culture course about contemporary Brazil.
Instruction in Portuguese by Brazilian faculty. Typical
credits: 33-36 for academic/calendar year, 18-21 for fall or spring
semester; 6 for summer session.
Eligibility & Application
Open to sophomores and above with a
2.75 GPA and two semesters college-level Portuguese and/or four
semesters college-level Spanish. Application deadline
for fall semester, academic year, or summer is March 15; spring semester or calendar
year deadline is October 1.

Estimated Cost Students from the University of Minnesota participating
on this program are charged a program fee that is inclusive of the cosponsored
program's fee and a University of Minnesota fee to cover the cost of application
processing, advising services, orientation, course registration, grade transfer
and posting for resident credit, assistance with financial aid, and international
health insurance. This administrative fee ranges from $500 to $1,500 and varies
by program. The cosponsored program's portion of the program fee can be used to
assist in estimating cost and is available at the program site linked below. In
most cases, airfare, field trips, meals, and personal expenses are additional.
