This program appeals to students who want to build a strong foundation in Spanish, want to work on community service projects, and are interested in learning about Mexican culture.
Academic Structure
Program type: Take classes at the Cemanahuac Educational Community in this study abroad center program. Classes are small and provide instruction in Spanish.
Level: 1000–3000 level courses.
Term: Fall semester, spring semester, summer session, May session, winter break.
Prerequisites: 2.5 GPA; certain courses have language prerequisites.
Courseload: 4 courses per semester for a total of 14–16 credits; 1 course per 3-week term for a total of 5 credits
Coursework
Semester program
Two tracks are offered on the semester program:
Intensive Language (14–16 credits)
Advance your Spanish language skills through intensive language classes. Enroll in three 4-week language courses, which are taught consecutively. Choose from Span 1001–1004, Span 3015, and Span 3021.
Service-Learning in Mexico (14-16 credits)
Strengthen your language skills while engaging the local community through service-learning. Take two 4-week language courses and an 8-week service-learning course, Community Engagement in Mexico, which combines classroom learning and a volunteer experience with a local grassroots organization (taught in English).
Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience with Your Future
This optional, 1-credit online course will provide opportunities for you to make meaning of your learning abroad experience and prepare you to communicate your intercultural competence to future employers, graduate schools, or law schools. As global connectivity becomes increasingly important, you are asked to think beyond the borders of your own perception and better understand the world based on the new ideas and experiences to which you are exposed. Your ability to work in a multicultural setting and to succeed in different cultural contexts is vital to your future. This course will help you apply these skills to your post-graduation plans. The course is taught online with University of Minnesota instructors. Registration information will be provided with the program pre-departure orientation materials. The cost of the course is included as part of the program fee.

Short-Term
Programs
Winter break, May session, and summer session program participants
enroll in 5 credits per three week term and choose from beginning
or intermediate level Spanish courses (1001–1004). The summer
program offers three consecutive terms and you can begin with
any term and take from one to all three. Short-term programs can
also be combined with other terms. Enroll in May session plus all
three summer sessions and complete four semesters of Spanish.
Spanish 3015, Spanish 3021, and Community Engagement in Mexico are not offered during short-term programs.
NOTE: Classes in Mexico must be taken with an A–F grade base. Pass/Fail grade base is NOT an option in Mexico.
Academic Fit with a University of Minnesota Degree Plan
Language & Culture in Mexico is great for improving any student's Spanish skills, but it is a particularly strong fit for College of Liberal Arts students looking to fulfill their language requirement.
Many courses have already been reviewed to meet Liberal Education requirements. Go to the Liberal Education Database to search for courses or submit ones for approval.
