Instructions for Course Selection Form

Service Learning in Mexico Track

• Write in Community Engagement in Mexico

• Select two language courses (choose from Span 1001-1004, Span 3015, and Span 3021).

• Total registation should equal 13 to 15 credits.

• If you choose to take the optional Global Identity course for 1 credit, add this course to the form.

Intensive Language Track

Short-term program:

• Choose one 5-credit language course (Span 1001-1004) for each session.

Semester program:

• Select three language courses (choose from Span 1001-1004, Span 3015, and Span 3021).

• Total registration should equal 13-15 credits.

•  If you choose to take the optional Global Identity course for 1 credit, add this course to the form.

FOST 3208 Community Engagement in Mexico (5 credits — Fall, Spr)

Service-learning course that connects classroom discussion, readings, and assignments to service with local education and health organizations. Papers and assignments can be done in Spanish for course to fulfill Spanish major/minor requirements. Students should meet with Spanish adviser for approval. No previous Spanish required.

Spanish Language Courses

SPAN 1001 Beginning Spanish I (5 credits Fall, Spr, May, Sum, WB)
First semester Spanish. Develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Some cultural readings are included. This course is intended for participants with no prior Spanish language instruction.

SPAN 1002 Beginning Spanish II (5 credits Fall, Spr, May, Sum, WB)
Second semester Spanish. Continue to develop basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills. Some cultural readings are included. Prerequisite: SPAN 1001 or equivilant.

SPAN 1003 Intermediate Spanish I (5 credits Fall, Spr, May, Sum, WB)
Thrid semester Spanish. Further improve conversation and comprehension proficiency, as well as reading and writing skills. Grammar review.
Prerequisite: SPAN 1002 or equivilant.

SPAN 1004 Intermediate Spanish II (5 credits — Fall, Spr, May, Sum, WB)
Fourth semester Spanish. Develop proficiency in conversation and comprehension, grammar knowledge, as well as the reading and writing skills necessary for advanced Spanish courses.
Prerequisite: SPAN 1003 or equivilant.


SPAN 3015 Spanish Composition & Conversation
(4 credits Fall, Spr)
Expand comprehension of both written and spoken texts. Improve ability to speak, read, and write in Spanish beyond the intermediate level. Prerequisite: SPAN 1004 or equivilant.

SPAN 3021 Advanced Communication Skills
(4 credits Fall, Spr)
Continue to develop and strengthen Spanish language skills through real world application. Prerequisite: SPAN 3015 or equivilant.
