Experience the exotic Amazon, the primal depths of the Peruvian rain forest, and the dramatic heights of the Andes. Work directly with the local shamans of Peru to learn traditional healing paradigms as practiced in their authentic cultural context. This 2 credit learning opportunity combines one week of web-based preparation with two weeks of field study in one of the richest biopreserves in the world. This course leads students to compare and contrast the use of natural substances such as plant medicines within indigenous cultures, modern pharmaceuticals, and herbal remedies; explore the role of spirituality in healing; and identify aspects and the importance of global healing in today's world of medicine. In addition to the field experience, students visit ancient ruins. Travel includes visits to remote areas with very basic amenities.
