This program appeals to students who are interested in participating in a university exchange program, want to take courses in their major, or would like to learn about Japanese culture.

Academic Structure

Program type: Bilateral Exchange in Nagoya is an exchange program. Instruction is in English or Japanese by Japanese faculty.

Level: Various levels.

Term: Spring semester, academic year. The University of Nagoya's academic year begins in October and ends in July.

Prerequisites: 3.0 GPA, sophomores and above.

Courseload: 13 credits per semester.

 

Coursework

Students on this program participate in Nagoya University's Program for Academic Exchange (NUPACE) and choose from four types of courses: Japanese language courses, area studies courses, special courses designed for NUPACE students, and introductory courses taught in Japanese (aimed at students with intermediate to advanced Japanese language skills). Academic year students may pursue an independent research in their field of study during second semester.

Japanese Language Courses
Students can choose from one of two language programs. The standard program offers beginning to advanced Japanese language and meets once per day for five days a week. The intensive program offers beginning to intermediate Japanese language and meets twice per day for five days a week.

Courses in Japan Area & Intercultural Studies
These courses are taught in English and cover subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and engineering sciences.

Special courses for NUPACE students
Students choose from English-taught courses designed for international students. Areas include agricultural science, economics, education, engineering, environmental studies, information science, international development, languages and cultures, law, and medicine. Students with advanced Japanese skills may be able to take regular Nagoya University courses.

Introductory Courses taught in Japanese
These courses are aimed at students who have intermediate to advanced Japanese language skills. Students must take a Japanese Language Proficiency test to place in these courses.

Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience with Your Future
This 1-credit online course will help you:

  1. process your overseas experience and apply what you learn upon your return
  2. understand intercultural lingo and relate it to your experience
  3. reflect on the multiple layers of cross-cultural experiences
  4. market your study abroad experience for future career goals.

Independent research (Guided Independent Study-GIS)
After consulting and obtaining permission from their academic advisors, academic year students may wish to pursue independent research in their major field of study during second semester.
