This program appeals to students who are interested in participating in an exchange program, want to learn or improve their Japanese, or need to fulfill liberal arts requirements.

Academic Structure

Program type: Exchange in Tokyo is a bilateral exchange program. Immerse yourself in student life at Sophia University. Instruction is in English and Japanese by Japanese faculty.

Level: Various levels.

Term: Spring semester, academic year.

Prerequisites: 2.75 GPA.

Courseload: 13–16 for spring semester; 26–30 for the academic year.

Coursework

You will enroll in a wide variety of classes in English and Japanese. Courses are available in comparative culture, Japanese language and studies, business, economics, geography, history, international relations, literature, philosophy, political science, religious studies, and sociology.

Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience with Your Future
This 1-credit online course will help you:

  1. process your overseas experience and apply what you learn upon your return
  2. understand intercultural lingo and relate it to your experience
  3. reflect on the multiple layers of cross-cultural experiences
  4. market your study abroad experience for future career goals.

Some classes are taught in English and Japanese by Sophia University faculty and are designed specifically for US and other international students. Regular Sophia university classes are available for students who have very advanced Japanese language skills.

Academic Fit with a University of Minnesota Degree Plan

This program works well for Japanese language majors and minors.
