About the Program
South Korea, one of the four “economic dragons” in Asia, is a country that simultaneously embraces an ultra-modern and a traditional way of life. On the streets of Seoul, advertisements for global companies such as Samsung and Hyundai illustrate South Korea's prowess as a newly industrialized nation. From the historical influence of Chinese culture, South Korea has created its own unique aesthetic interpretation in the arts, architecture, and cinema. Seoul has a multitude of museums and cultural venues, such as the Gyeongbok, Deoksu, and Changgyeong Palaces. These give students a historical perspective into Korea's dynastic periods, which established the intellectual and cultural foundation for modern Korean society.
Known around the world as the most prestigious private university in Korea, Yonsei University serves as the base for the University Study in South Korea program. The University is located 20 minutes from downtown Seoul, and is one of the most modern facilities in the world. Students in the program will enroll in courses taught in English and Korean through Yonsei’s Division of International Education and Exchange.
Faculty & Staff
All courses are taught
by Yonsei University faculty. This program is offered by the Learning
Abroad Center in partnership with the CIEE study abroad program.
Students will receive a cultural and academic orientation upon arrival
provided jointly by CIEE and Yonsei University’s Division
of International Education and Exchange. Both offer academic advising
and support services for study abroad students. Pre-departure support
is provided by Learning Abroad Center staff and CIEE.
Housing & Meals
Program participants stay
in Yonsei University’s “International House,”
a dormitory for international students. Students have access to
a lounge and study and recreation areas. A computer room, shared refrigerator in each room, and laundry facilities are also available
for use. Meals are available at local eateries on and off campus.
Excursions & Social Activities
To enhance learning outside
of the classroom, the program includes visits to Korean organizations
and the North Korea/South Korea border. An international excursion
to Japan is included, increasing students’ understanding
of Korea’s influence in Asia and to allow for further study
of the Korean diaspora. Weekend homestays and independent cultural
activities enhance students’ grasp of Korean cultural
and family life. Participants also have the opportunity to
sign up for the International Buddy Program through Yonsei University's Global Lounge and be paired with a
Korean student for cultural exchange and language practice.
