Description
Explore the rich, layered history of Athens. The focus of the program is on the city's development from ancient city to modern metropolis. Major monuments such as the Parthenon, Syndagma Square, the New Acropolis Museum, and the Olympic complex as well as vernacular architecture and public spaces are studied. Students spend two and a half weeks in Athens, exploring downtown and suburban neighborhoods and five days on the islands of Rhodes and Laros, where you explore the Medieval City of Rhodes and Porto Lago (built by Mussolini during the Italian occupation of the Dodecanese Islands).
Curriculum
Examine ancient, medieval, early-modern, and modern architecture of Athens, Rhodes, and Lakki (Porto Lago) within a historical and social context. Explore public life on the streets and plaza's of Athens. There is an introduction to local village life and related spaces, as well as an introduction to the landscape and topography of Greece and its relationship to architecture and culture.
Eligibility & Application
Open to all university undergraduate and graduate students that have taken ARCH 3411 or ARCH 3412. Applications must be submitted by March 15, 2008.
