Description
The University of Minnesota Department of Architecture Netherlands offers this special opportunity to experience the Netherlands through an urban design perspective. Engage with housing and urban design projects that exemplify the best of Dutch design. Field trips, lectures, and seminars led by Dutch professionals and academics address the question "What is so extraordinary about Dutch Housing and Urbanism?" This question is answered from three perspectives:
1. land, water, and transportation;
2. planning and development;
3. materials and urbanism.
Curriculum
Analyze contemporary examples of housing and urbanism and focus on one or two issues to explain the Dutch contribution. Sketch journals, photo documentation, and charrettes help you develop arguments for the required final paper. Professionals from the Twin Cities may join the program for several days each week to facilitate a discussion about the differences between the Dutch and American approaches.
The curriculum for each week follows the same pattern. On Mondays, University of Minnesota Professor Julia Williams Robinson leads field trips with guidance from local professionals. Tuesdays and Wednesdays consist of lectures in the mornings and site visits in the afternoon. On Thursdays and Fridays Dutch professionals lead field trips. A panel discussion and seminar follows each field trip.
