Description
With all of Rome as your classroom, explore the city which was the birthplace of the baroque, one of the most brilliant periods in the history of Western civilization. Rome is one of the most famous capital cities of the world with magnificent monuments such as the Pantheon and Colosseum which document the splendor of its ancient history.
After an introduction to the high renaissance (Michelangelo, Sistine Chapel ceiling; St. Peter's Basilica), the course covers major masterpieces of art of the seventeenth century by the most famous artists of the time (Caravaggio, Carrracci, Bernini, Borromini). Monday through Thursday, lectures begin at the study center and, then, continue with visits to museums, churches, fountains and squares throughout the city.
What better way to do two things at once, live and study in Rome and receive 4 semester credits. You have seen the movie "Angels and Demons," now experience the city.
Faculty Leader
Professor Michael Stoughton teaches the course. His speciality is Italian art of the renaissance and baroque periods and he has taught art history courses in Italy since 2000.
Excursions
On the three Friday's, there are additional excursions. The last is outside Rome to Tivoli, with one of the most famous gardens in the world (Organ Fountain; Walk of One Hundred Fountains). Eight free days allow additional time for exploration of Rome, or individual trips to other famous cities such as Florence, home of the Renaissance, or Pompeii, the ancient city buried by an eruption of the volcano Vesuvius.
Housing & Meals
Students share furnished apartments with fully-equipped kitches and may shop and prepare meals in their apartments or eat at local restaurants. An arrival lunch and farewell dinner celebrate the beginning and ending of the program.
On-Site Support
ACCENT provides the on-site support for this program.
The ACCENT center, with classroom and computer lab, is situated in the heart of the historic center of Rome, just a short walk from the Pantheon and Piazza Navona.
With good academic planning this program can fit well into the degree plans for many majors. Study Abroad in Your Major advising sheets explain why study abroad is important for a major, indicate what the department wants students to consider when selecting a program, and provide academic planning hints. This program may appear as a special recommendation on an advising sheet. If your major is not listed, talk to an adviser—this program may still fit your academic, career, and professional goals.
