Description

The historic sites of the Orkney Islands off the north coast of mainland Scotland present a unique set of challenges for both preservation and interpretation. The sites range from the structures of the Neolithic Orkney World Heritage Site, dating from about 3,000 BC, to hundreds of buildings from World War II defences of Scapa Flow, home to the Royal Naval Fleet. Besides the great time span, the sites have a range of technical preservation issues dissimilar to those found in Minnesota.

Curriculum

The course provides opportunities to learn about preservation issues through classroom lectures, meetings with local officials, field trips to a variety of historic sites, and individual research. The Neolithic sides from the Heart of Orkney Neolithic World Heritage Site, and a significant focus of the trip is to understand the issues surrounding a World War Heritage Site. The personal research content is tailored to meet the personal interest of each student.
