About the Program

The historic city of Norwich is home to UEA. Much that England has to offer is concentrated here, with London less than two hours away by rail or road. It is one of Britain's major provincial cities, large enough to be cosmopolitan, yet small enough to be intimate and friendly, offering numerous attractions to students. During medieval times Norwich was the second most important city in Great Britain, with a fine Norman castle, cathedral, and hundreds of medieval buildings and churches. Recently Norwich has been voted one of Britain's top cities for quality of life and prosperity.

The city offers a rich variety of entertainment, including nightclubs, cinemas, and international restaurants. The Norwich Arts Centre offers jazz, drama, rock, and world music, and the Theatre Royal is one of Britain's top provincial venues, showing many London productions of opera, ballet, plays, and musicals. Norwich has its tranquil side too; it has riverside walks, quiet gardens, parks, cobbled pedestrian streets, museums, and art galleries. Everywhere you see medieval and modern buildings coexisting in one of England's most unspoiled cities.

The University enrolls 13,000 students a year making UEA large enough to offer a full range of teaching, research, laboratory, computer, library, cultural, and sports facilities, yet small enough to be congenial and manageable for the visiting student.

The focal point of the University of East Anglia campus is the Square, an outdoor meeting place. Leading off the Square is the Street with shops, launderette, post office, banks, and the Accommodation Centre. UEA publishes a regular events sheet listing a wide variety of talks, lectures, concerts, exhibitions, and plays. There is something happening at the university almost every night. There are over 100 student-run clubs and societies ranging from archery to yoga. Many activities take place at Union House, the social focal point of campus. UEA has one of the best live music programs on the university circuit.

Faculty & Staff
UEA takes pride in the quality of its instructors. Well over half the departments at UEA that have been government-assessed for teaching have achieved a rating of "Excellent." UEA also enjoys a reputation as one of the UK's leading research universities. As a result, UEA students are exposed to the latest knowledge and thinking, taught by staff at the forefront of their disciplines.

The International Office is a great resource for you throughout the study abroad experience. They will be sending you acceptance materials prior to departure and can also meet you at the airport. An orientation is organized for international students by the Dean of Students' office. They will cover cultural and academic issues, and it also includes social events and tours of Norwich.

Housing & Meals
All visiting students are guaranteed housing in dormitories on the main university campus. The dorms have central heating and are fully furnished, including bed linen for a small extra charge. There is no "meal plan" at UEA—residences are self-catering so you can cook for yourself or make use of the wide range of reasonably priced restaurants and snack bars on campus. The communal kitchens provide an ideal opportunity to mix with British students.

To learn more about UEA's housing you can look at their website under "accomodation." The "en-suite" accomodation is included in the program fee.

Excursions & Social Activities
The UEA offers regular study visits and excursions to London, Shakespeare's Stratford-upon-Avon, the ancient Stonehenge, Thomas Hardy country, and other focal points of English culture. You also have access to a wide range of student clubs and societies.
