This program has two tracks. The Language and Culture track appeals to students who are interested in learning about Italian culture or want to take classes taught in English. The Internship track appeals to students who have previously taken Italian and want to intern as well as take classes taught in Italian.

Academic Structure

Program type: Study Abroad in Florence is a study abroad center program. Take classes at a study center with instruction in English by Italian faculty or intern and take classes with instruction in Italian taught by Italian faculty.

Level: 1000–3000 levels.

Term: Fall semester, spring semester, or May session.

Prerequisites: 2.5 GPA for Language & Culture track; 2.5 GPA and 4 semesters of Italian for the Internship track

Courseload: 13–18 credits (4 for May)

Semester Program

Language and Culture track
A wide variety of classes are available on psychology, politics, art, business, and Italian language. You are required to take one Italian language course as well.

Internship track

Take courses taught in Italian as well an internship in a field of your interest. Students enroll in an intensive language course geared towards the language that will be used in your internship. Students may also choose to enroll in other courses from the Language and Culture track.

Global Identity: Connecting Your International Experience with Your Future
This optional, 1-credit online course will provide opportunities for you to make meaning of your learning abroad experience and prepare you to communicate your intercultural competence to future employers, graduate schools, or law schools. As global connectivity becomes increasingly important, you are asked to think beyond the borders of your own perception and better understand the world based on the new ideas and experiences to which you are exposed. Your ability to work in a multicultural setting and to succeed in different cultural contexts is vital to your future. This course will help you apply these skills to your post-graduation plans. The course is taught online with University of Minnesota instructors. Registration information will be provided with the program pre-departure orientation materials. The cost of the course is included as part of the program fee.

May Session

Students on the May session program take Italian 3015. The May session is worth 4 credits and taught for three weeks. The program is intended for students interested in expanding Italian knowledge. A prerequiste of 4 semesters of Italian is required. This May Session program is led by Sabrian Ovan, a faculty member in the Department of French and Italian. The course is taught in Italian. Field trips to Bologna, Rome and throughout Florence are included.

Internships

Internship placements are available in almost any field. Participants earn 3 credits through the internship combined with the Perspectives on Experiential Learning Abroad course.
