Print and submit the following pieces to the Learning Abroad Center (map):

Program Name: Scandinavian Urban Studies Term, Divided States of Europe, Northern Ireland: Democracy & Social Change
Sponsor: HECUA
Program Track/Host Institution: Leave Blank

  • University of Minnesota Transcript
    Submit an unofficial copy of your college transcript.
  • Page 3 of the HECUA Application for Admission Fill out the Academic Reference section (this is the name and information for the person filling out your Academic Reference Form). Write and sign your name at the bottom of the form and check the boxes that apply. The Signatures/Approvals section will be filled out by the LAC and turned into HECUA for you.

Complete and submit the following pieces to the HECUA:

  • HECUA Application for Admission pdf
    Complete pages 1, 2 and 4 and pay special attention to the instructions above regarding page 3.
  • Personal Essay(s)
    All essays must be typed, written in English, and should include a discussion of your academic and professional goals. The essay is a very important part of your application, so make certain it represents your best writing effort and proofread carefully. For explicit instructions on what to include see the directions on the HECUA application form. Depending on the program you choose you may need to write multiple essays.
  • University of Minnesota Transcript
    Submit an official copy of your college transcript. If you have previously attended another institution, you must request an official transcript from that institution and have it sent to HECUA as well.
  • Academic Reference Formpdf
    Must be filled out by an instructor or professor at the University of Minnesota. This will either be returned to you to be submitted along with your other application parts, or it will be sent directly to HECUA by the person filling it out. Either is permissible.
  • Application Fee
    Submit a non-refundable application fee of $50 for all programs. ($75 if you are applying for two programs at the same time.) Make your check or money order is payable to HECUA. Credit cards are not accepted for payment of the application fee. Do not pay application fee to Learning Abroad Center.

Eligibility Requirements
This program is open to all individuals. Eligibility does not require student or University of Minnesota status. Students meeting the criteria below are qualified to apply for this program:

Class Standing Sophomore and above

Application Deadlines
Submit complete applications to the Learning Abroad Center according to the appropriate deadline:

Scandinavian Urban Studies Term (Fall Semester) March 15
Divided States of Europe (Spring Semester) November 1
Northern Ireland: Democracy and Social Change (Spring Semester) November 1

*If the deadline falls on a weekend, submit your materials on the following business day.

Next Steps

Here's what to expect after submitting your application to the Learning Abroad Center:

  1. The Learning Abroad Center sends an email notification to confirm your application has been received.
  2. The Learning Abroad Center emails you to request any missing items if your application is incomplete.
  3. Once the Learning Abroad Center has reviewed your completed application, we will email you with your status. This email will contain important instructions to follow after you have received your acceptance notice from your university/co-sponsor.
  4. The university/co-sponsor emails you with a final decision regarding your acceptance into the program. This can take a week to several months.
  5. If accepted, follow the instructions outlined in the Learning Abroad Center email referred to in Step #3. You need to pay a program deposit to the Learning Abroad Center. (Do not pay a deposit to your university/co-sponsor.)
  6. Submit additional information and materials if requested by the university/co-sponsor.
  7. If you choose not to participate in the program, email your Learning Abroad Center program contact and your university/co-sponsor contact.

Program Fees

Students participating on co-sponsored programs are charged a program fee which is inclusive of the co-sponsor's program fee, University of Minnesota educational costs, and international health insurance. University of Minnesota educational costs cover application processing, advising servies, orientation, course registration, grade transfer and posting for credit as well as assistance with financial aid when applicable. Based on these additional services and benefits, the overall program fee will be higher than the co-sponsor's published program fee.
