Academics: Special Courses for U.S. Students

Offered Fall Semester
Note: During fall semester students are in classes with other US students. 

Grammar/Methodology; 3 credits
Writing practice including typical French exercises. Analysis of the French language and linguistic structures. Meets 4 hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3016 (or FREN 3010 if credit has already been given for 3016)

Phonetics; 3 credits
Study of French sounds and intonation, including phonetic transcriptions, drills, and play and poetry readings. Meets 2 hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3014. Course cannot be repeated. (If you have already taken 3014 on campus, the Montpellier course will not count toward the major/minor).

Civilization of the South; 3 credits
Discover the history and customs of the Southern France region. This course covers ancient history to Southern France's place in contemporary Europe. Site visits and excursions included with this class. Meets 2 hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3650; Civ. course requirement or elective for major/minor

Internship course; 3 credits
Covers the world of work in France and centers mostly on social issues. It accompanies the internships and includes a term paper, a midterm, a series of quizzes and a journal. It is three hours a week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3650, fulfills elective credit for major/minor

Offered Spring Semester
Note: During spring semester classes are only for students on the University of Minnesota program


Translation 1; 1.5 credits
Translation of texts from English to French. Meets two hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: Must be paired with another 1.5 credit language course to fulfill FREN 3010

Literature of the Fantastic; 3 credits
Reading and discussion of the literature related to this specific literary time period. Meets 2 hours per week.

Seminar in French Politics and Culture; 3 credits
Discussion of current events through the reading and discussion of journals, news events, and media.  Meets 2 hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3602 or 3650; ; Civ. course requirement or elective for major/minor

France from All Sides; 3 credits
A portrait of Modern France that analyzes all the major aspects of French culture. Discussions, readings, film clips. 3 hours per week.

Art History; 3 credits
Taught in collaboration with the Musee Fabre, one of the most famous museums of France (outside of Paris). Lectures on the various art periods and paintings and sculptures represented in the Musee in Montpellier. Special entrance to the museum and a field trip to the contemporary Carre d’Art in Nimes is included. 3 h/week

Conversation course
Includes discussions on current topics, and vocabulary acquisition. Film clips and articles will trigger conversation. A conversation partner will be assigned and shared activities will be organized.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3018 (do not repeat if already taken on campus)

For Academic Year Students during Spring Semester
Advanced Grammar/Translation; 3 credits
Study and practice of advanced discreet grammar topics and translation of literary and press texts from English to French. Meets 3 hours per week.

U of M French Department equivalent: FREN 3010 (Students can earn up to a total of 6 credits of electives for language work beyond 3016).
