Academics: Summer Program
- 3–10 semester credits, depending on current language level and term(s) of participation
- Intended for all levels, beginning through advanced students
- Intensive French language study
The Study Abroad in Montpellier summer program offers intensive French language study with other international students at the Institute for Foreign Students. The program is designed for students at beginning and intermediate language levels though some advanced students can also be accommodated.
Participants may choose either a four- or eight-week term and will receive credit for one language course for each 4-week term. Courses are designed to help international students develop strong language skills and deepen their cultural understanding. Courses are pre-approved for University of Minnesota credit, and the curriculum is a prescribed set of courses.

Language Courses
The following course descriptions provide additional details on the type of credit awarded for language classes at the Institute. Your University of Minnesota registration will not reflect your exact daily schedule at the Institute, because Institute courses are divided into multiple components.
Fren 1001 and 1002: Beginning French; 5 credits each
Introduces students to the four language skills: speaking, writing, listening, and reading. Topics include everyday issues (shopping, directions, family, housing, etc.)
Fren 1003 and 1004: Intermediate French; 5 credits each
Development of listening, writing, and speaking skills, in the context of cultural themes related to the Francophone world. Grammar review and elaboration.
Fren 3015: Advanced French Composition and Communication; 4 credits
Advanced study of French with particular emphasis on grammar review, vocabulary building, oral communication skills, and language usage in cultural contexts.
Fren 3016 (prereq 3015): Advanced French Composition and Communication; 4 credits
Advanced study of grammar in context: emphasis on writing for varied communicative purposes, reading for style and content, translation.
French 3010 (prereq 3016): French Expression; 3-4 credits
Intensive work in oral/written communication.
