- Internships available for fifth-semester students
- Online Global Identity course (optional for an additional fee, 1 credit)
Language and Culture students take courses with other international students at the Institute for Foreign Students. There are five teaching levels at the Institute for Foreign Students and students are placed according to their level of proficiency.
Courses are designed to help international students develop strong language skills and deepen their cultural understanding. Class sizes range from 30–50 students, and the faculty specialize in different areas of language learning.

The following course descriptions provide additional details on the type of credit awarded for language and culture classes at the Institute. Your University of Minnesota registration will not reflect your exact daily schedule at the Institute, because Institute courses are divided into multiple components.
Language Courses
MONT 1003 and 1004: Intermediate French; 5 credits each
Development of listening, writing and speaking skills, in the context of cultural themes related to the Francophone world. Grammar review and elaboration.
MONT 3015: Advanced French Composition and Communication; 3 credits
Advanced study of French with particular emphasis on grammar review, vocabulary building, oral communication skills, and language usage in cultural contexts.
MONT 3016 (prereq 3015): Advanced French Composition and Communication; 3 credits
Advanced study of grammar in context: emphasis on writing for varied communicative purposes, reading for style and content, translation.
Communication Courses
MONT 3014: French Phonetics; 2 credits
Articulatory description of the sounds of French, phonetic transcription, and remedial practice to improve one’s pronunciation.
MONT 3018: French Oral Communication; 3 credits
Intensive work in oral expression and listening comprehension in French, incorporating a wide variety of cultural topics.
MONT 3010: French Expression; 3–6 credits
Intensive work in oral/written communication.
MONT 3017: French Communication; 1 credit
Extended practice in oral/written communication
Culture Course
MONT 3650: Topics in French/Francophone Culture; 3 credits
A presentation of Southern French Civilization from ancient times to the present and how it affected the southern areas of France, in particular the Languedoc and Provence regions.
Internships*
Internships are available in various fields of interest. The accompanying course, which is also offered to students on the Integrated Studies option, helps you to reflect on the French work environment while engaging in your internship. If you are interested in doing an internship, fill out and submit the Internship Application on your Confirmation Checklist.
