How long after I apply will I find out if I'm accepted?

It usually takes two to three weeks after receipt of your completed application.

Do I have to be a University of Minnesota student?

These programs are open both University of Minnesota students and students from other colleges or universities.

Do I have to speak a foreign language?

All courses will be taught in English, so there is no language requirement.

How many students can go on the program?

Programs are small, typically about 15-25 students.

What happens if the program fills before I can apply?

There is a waiting list if the program fills; however, there is no guarantee that spaces will open up.

Do I need to be an undergraduate student?

No. However, graduate students should be aware that they are taking a 3XXX level class.

Are there prerequisites or do I have to have prior subject matter knowledge?

There are no prerequisites for Global Seminars, but you must be interested in the subject matter being taught, as it is an intensive course at the 3XXX level.

Do I need a passport?

All students going on Global Seminars will need a valid passport.

Do I need a visa?

It depends on the program. U.S. citizens will receive visa information from their program team.

Will I need to attend an orientation?

All students are required to complete an online Health and Safety orientation. There are pre-departure orientation sessions for all students participating in Global Seminar courses.

Who will I take the course with and who teaches the course?

Your course will be with fellow University of Minnesota students and students from other institutions around the U.S. They are taught by a University of Minnesota professor.  Some lectures may be given by local professors and experts.

Can I turn in work after the program?

No. All assignments must be completed and turned into the Faculty Leader before the end of the program.

When will my grades be reported?

Your grades will be reported in July; however, special arrangements can be made for students who will be graduating after the May Session.

Will the credits transfer?

Yes. All credits transfer back as University of Minnesota resident credit, are factored into your GPA, and are included on your transcript.

Travel

Are there planned excursions?

All of the programs will have excursions irectly related to the topic of study and overseas location.

Is there free time to travel?

Students will have the opportunity to travel on some weekends and after the program. Please note that this is an intensive course and attendance is mandatory. Typically, there will not be opportunities to travel outside of the city during the week except on course excursions.

Is there a group flight?

It depends on the program. Some Global Seminars have a mandatory group flight included in the program cost. Other programs allow students the flexibility to make their own travel arrangements. In this case, students will have the option of booking the suggested flight.

Can I change my flight?

You must depart with the group flight. You may have an opportunity to set a different return date depending on the program and the seat availability.

Financials

What is included in the program costs ?

The program costs include tuition, housing, some meals, in-country transportation, excursions, entrance fees, and insurance. Some program fees include airfare.

Are there scholarships available?

Yes! Some Scholarshps and Funding are available through the Learning Abroad Center.

Can I use financial aid?

Yes. You can use financial aid, but typically you must be registered for 6 credits of Summer Session courses. Therefore, you will need to take another 3 credits during the summer to be eligible for financial aid. You will need to talk with a financial aid adviser to discuss all of your options. What else should I plan on spending money on?

Although spending patterns vary from student to student, there are some things you should keep in mind when planning for your Global Seminar. Some of these items are: passport (plus the cost of photos), books and other course materials, independent travel, souvenirs, and meals not included in the program fee.

Health

Does the program have insurance?

Yes. All students will have insurance that is included in the program fee.

Do I need any immunizations to travel to the country I'll be studying in?

The Center for Disease Control lists immunizations they recommend for people traveling to different countries. You should also talk to your doctor about where you will be traveling for any of their recommendations.
