When choosing to pursue an Outside Program instead of a University of Minnesota-affiliated program, consider the following:
Is your decision based on full consideration of all options and accurate information about University of Minnesota programs?
- Attend a First Step Meeting.
- Talk with an adviser in the Learning Abroad Center, 230 Heller Hall (map).
Do you have accurate information about the Outside Program process and the organization or university you are interested in?
- Contact the organization directly to request information.
- Speak with alumni to
gain another perspective on the program.
- Understand what it means to do an Outside Program; it is very different than doing a University of Minnesota program.
Will you receive a transcript from an accredited, degree-granting, tertiary-level institution?
- If not, you cannot receive University of Minnesota credit for your work.
- The credit must be posted as resident credit on the host institution's transcript and not transfer credit. The University of Minnesota will not transfer transfer credit.
How many transfer credits have you already earned?
- At the discretion of the Office of Admissions you may receive transfer credit on your University of Minnesota transcript for the coursework you complete on the Outside Program.
- In no cases will you receive resident credit for an Outside Program.
- Check with your academic adviser about transfer credit guidelines for your college and major.
- Transfer credits are recorded on your University of Minnesota transcript as pass/fail, and as such are not included in your GPA.
- A maximum of 25% of the credits toward a University of Minnesota degree, taken after admission to the University, may be taken pass/fail.
- Consult your college and major adviser to determine how many pass/fail transfer credits you may complete.
How soon after studying abroad do you plan to graduate?
- Credit from study abroad can take from several weeks to a few months to be sent to the University of Minnesota.
- Note of this delay especially if you plan to graduate immediately after your study abroad program.
- Read the Undergraduate Transfer Credit for Outside Programs FAQ for more details.
