Graduate students also have the option of doing the Outside Program Process or just purchasing the CISI insurance and signing the Release & Waiver to turn into the Learning Abroad Center.
Please note: If you have a graduate assistantship then you may already be covered by your existing health insurance. To verify you are covered check your graduate assistant health plan.
If you need to be registered on campus to maintain your enrollment or to access financial aid then you must to work with the Learning Abroad Center. Please review the information and process outlined on this web site. Overall, the process is the same for you as for undergraduates and outlined in the Application Instructions. However, you need one more piece:
A copy of your degree program form signed by your adviser.
The Graduate School does not post any credits to your University of Minnesota transcript unless the courses are listed on the degree program form. You do not have to have the form processed by the Graduate School before you go abroad but you need to be sure that by the time the transcript is received by the Graduate School they have your degree program form.
You can have your transcript sent to:
University of Minnesota Graduate School
Office of Admissions
101 Pleasant Street SE
309 Johnston Hall
Minneapolis, MN 55455-0421
Some students have had their study abroad transcript sent to themselves and then delivered it personally to Graduate School after their program ended. In these cases you must be careful not to wait too long since financial aid will be waiting for your transfer credit to post. If it does not post then you may need to repay the aid you received for the program.
Directed Study
Graduate students also
have the option of doing the Directed Study Abroad process or just
purchasing the CISI insurance and signing the Release & Waiver to turn into the Learning Abroad Center.
The benefit to working with the Learning Abroad Center is assistance with documenting the additional study abroad costs for the financial aid process as well as a transcript memo that states you did the coursework abroad. There is a $50 fee for these services.
