Application Instructions
The WIV Program application exists for University of Minnesota students participating in a work, intern, volunteer, or teach abroad opportunity. It also exists to help facilitate the process of obtaining CISI international travel, health, and security insurance required by the University of Minnesota. If you are participating in a non-credit WIV program that is not affiliated by the UofM, apply directly through the WIV program provider and register your participation through the WIV Tracking Form.
NOTE: It is your responsibility to apply directly to your WIV Program provider. Once you have been accepted by your WIV program provider, you may begin the Learning Abroad Center's WIV Program process.
Deadlines
- Varies depending on the program—contact the program provider for specific dates
- Materials to be submitted to the Learning Abroad Center must be uploaded at least two weeks prior to your departure
To complete the online application for the WIV process, you will need to provide the following information on the online application:

You will be prompted to select a program from an automated list. Your program will not be on this list, so click on “I don’t see my program. I will enter the information.” Please be prepared to provide the following:

Submit
Use your University of Minnesota internet ID (x.500) and password to log into the online application.
Complete
A Learning Abroad Center representative will process your application request within one week of submission. You’ll be notified via email that an a application checklist has been assigned to you, which includes:
• Letter
of Acceptance from WIV Program
• University
of Minnesota Release and Waiver
Detailed descriptions and instructions for submitting each checklist item are included on the application checklist assigned to you. If at any point you decide not to continue with the WIV program process, log into the Education Abroad Application System and submit a cancellation request.
Next Steps
The Learning Abroad Center will review your application checklist materials once complete and you will be contacted via email. You will then be assigned a confirmation checklist. log into the online application to review the confirmation checklist and submit the required items. These items will help facilitate your pre-departure preparations.Program Fees
You are responsible for all program fees to your WIV Program provider. They will bill you directly. Your University of Minnesota student account will be charged the monthly rate for the CISI international travel, health, and security insurance fee for your term abroad, once your application checklist materials have been reviewed and confirmed.
