Learning Abroad in Political Science
“The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page.” —Saint Augustine (354-430)
Study Abroad Process
This is the basic process you'll complete in order to study abroad. The order in which you do things is somewhat flexible.
Academic Planning
Review the following suggestions from the Department of Political Science before beginning your study abroad research.
Choose your study abroad experience wisely
- Use the Learning Abroad Center catalog, resource center, and website to find a program that matchers your interests. Start planning early. Explore all of your options before deciding on one program.
- Ask your advisors and professors for their recommendations on study abroad programs.
- Choose programs that offer unique courses that are not offered on the U of M Twin Cities Campus.
- Don't focus ONLY on courses that fit major, minor or liberal education requirements. Select some courses that are unique to the country in which you will study. Take an art class in Italy, a course on indigenous people in Australia, or an environmental course in Costa Rica.
- Find the program that is best for you, not the program that seems to be the most popular or attracts the most students.
Align study abroad with your personal, academic, and professional goals
- Gain confidence as you learn new things about yourself, others, and the world in which you live.
- Increase your appreciation for other nations' and peoples' perspectives.
- Improve your problem-solving and critical -thinking skills.
- Access an expanded political science curriculum.
- Enhance your cross-cultural communications and improve your foreign language fluency.
- Prepare yourself for life after college and becoming a globally engaged citizen.
Work toward completion of your political science major or minor
- Notice the similarities and differences between your host country and your own. This awareness will provide insights into your own political system.
- Learn about other political systems and gain greater understanding as to how and why they have evolved as they have.
- Be cognizant of what works and what doesn't in other governmental structures as well as your own.
- Observe how political scientists in other countries view their discipline. Listen to other students' perspectives on their own political systems as well as their observations on American politics.
- Seek out courses that are not offered at the U of M to broaden your political perspectives further.
- Consider fieldwork, internship or volunteer experiences that can help you immerse yourself in the local culture.
- For some students, especially transfer students, it can be important to choose a program that yields resident credit. (Transfer credits may constitute no more than fifty percent of the upper division coursework for a CLA major.)
Consider timing and length
- There is no “best” time, or minimum length of time, for a student to study abroad. Ideally a full semester or full year is most desirable, but summer programs and the shorter May term and January sessions are also valuable experiences that enhance a student's cultural awareness.
- Seniors in the Honors Program should plan to be on campus at least one semester of their senior year to complete their honors theses.
- Senior-year study abroad may require additional planning. Will you satisfy CLA's senior rule and complete 15 of your last 30 credits on the Twin Cities Campus or through resident credit? Will the grades from your study abroad arrive in time for graduation? Will study abroad your final semester disadvantage you in seeking employment after graduation?
Seek cultural immersion
- Make the most of your study abroad experience by selecting programs that offer significant cultural immersion.
- Classroom learning is only one part of the study abroad experience. Investigate programs that offer such things as internships, community involvement activities, research opportunities, and homestays that enable you to closely connect with the community.
- Take risks and explore new things. Be realistic in your expectations. Not all students are ready for the same level of adventure. Remember that you are an individual; your comfort level may be different than your classmates—and that is okay.
Pay special attention to program type
- Field Study programs: Learn through doing. Programs built around internships, service-learning, and field research may be especially attractive to experiential learners. For political science majors, the MSID and HECUA programs as well as programs that offer parliamentary Internships are particularly good choices.
- University Study programs: Study in a university alongside degree-seeking students from the host country. Many foreign universities, on all continents, offer a wide variety of political science courses.
- Study Abroad Centers: Study abroad centers offer study opportunities designed for non-native students. Opportunities for field study, internships and/or classes in a host-country university may be additional options. The degree to which you wish to immerse yourself in the culture is up to you.
- Try a Short-Term Introduction: Global seminars, usually about three weeks in length, are additional options for students who are unable or who choose not to go abroad for an extended length of time. Study abroad programs are strongly encouraged although most short-term global seminars are not applicable to the political science major or minor.
Fulfill Liberal Education requirements
- Advance planning can help you apply study abroad credits to many of the University’s Liberal Education requirements.
- Decide early which requirements you want to satisfy through courses taken abroad and plan your coursework accordingly.
- Consult the Learning Abroad Center’s database of study abroad courses that have been approved for Liberal Education. If a course is not listed, it may still meet a liberal education requirement. We encourage you to submit your course(s) for evaluation.
Once You Have Selected a Program
- Use the Academic Planning for Study Abroad (APSA) form to structure your academic planning.
- Once you have chosen the courses that you want to take abroad (always choosing more courses than you intend to take), meet with your major and college advisors to discuss your intended courses.
While You Are Abroad
- If, once you are in country, you become interested in a course that was not included on your APSA but might be pertinent to your major or minor, gather as much information as you can about the course and then consult by email with your major and college advisor.
- Hold onto course materials (e.g., syllabus, exams, papers, reports, and at least a photocopied table of contents of any key textbook) and bring them home with you.
After You Return
- Once your grades from your study abroad program are posted on your U of M record, make an appointment with the political science advisor to discuss the courses which you wish to obtain final approval for use toward the major or minor.
- Bring to that appointment the course materials.
- If your study abroad courses were evaluated and approved for liberal education requirements and completion of these requirements is not reflected on your APAS report, please contact the Learning Abroad Center.
- Be aware that courses taken abroad may require many weeks, or even months, to get accepted and posted at the University of Minnesota. Times vary with programs. Let the Learning Abroad Center know well in advance if impending graduation or other special circumstances lend particular urgency to your case.
