“It was really refreshing to go to another university in a completely different country, and still see that students face the same issues.”

—Carlie A.

Carlie is pursuing a Bachelor of Individualized Studies (BIS) degree in sociology, leadership, and mass communications. She participated in the Study & Internships in London program, where she interned in career counseling at London Metropolitan University.

For Carlie, the opportunity to work in London was an important aspect of the Study & Internships program. In a placement at London Metropolitan University, she worked with career counselors. This experience put an international twist on her previous work experience in the field with the University of Minnesota. “It gave me an international perspective on my career,” she said, “and it was really refreshing to go to another university in a completely different country, and still see that students face the same issues.”

Carlie also felt challenged by the international context of her internship. She said it was an eye-opening experience for her to see how a different culture works, especially in the work environment. “Just because you think you’re good at something, doesn’t mean that sticking that skill into a different setting means that it’s going to be completely acceptable,” she pointed out. She felt that being able to work in London was the best part of the program, and that she wouldn’t trade the experience for anything.

Carlie tried to incorporate the lifestyle of a working Londoner into her daily life while she was there. Along with commuting on the tube, going to the grocery store, and managing her time, she also sought out opportunities to experience London’s cultural life. Through a theatre course, she was able to see plays and musicals. She participated in celebrations and festivals in London, and felt that she filled every moment of her free time with an activity. She truly enjoyed her experience in London, and now she finds that she misses many aspects of her life there. She said, “It’s definitely worth it to go and to live, and to be integrated into a place for so long, and to really feel like that’s home for you.”
