“Psychology deals with people, and this lets you explore how other people think and live.”

—Nicole L.

Nicole, a psychology major, went to Lancaster, England in the Spring Semester of 2004. The Lancaster semester was recommended to her by the Learning Abroad Center because of the strong science and psychology

While at Lancaster, Nicole took two psychology courses in order to fulfill requirements for the major. She found the less structured atmosphere of her host university to encourage personal responsibility, as well as creativity in choosing research topics. She said that taking required courses for her major in England added an international dimension to her understanding of the field. For example, the professor for her social psychology course was from Ireland, and drew on examples from the political situation there in order to illustrate psychological phenomena.

Nicole felt the coursework was equivalent to the University of Minnesota in terms of the knowledge she gained, but added a uniquely international aspect. “Psychology deals with people,” she said, “and this lets you explore how other people think and live.” Nicole is now looking for an international dimension in her career path, and said she’d be very comfortable with a traveling position.

Nicole was very comfortable in Lancaster, and with the English culture. She was placed in dorm, or "college", housing, and lived mainly with English students. She said this was an important part of her experience, and she became close friends with her collegemates. They made her feel accepted and also taught her about the culture. Overall, she called the experience a "good fit" for her, and said she would do it again.
