Several academic programs at the University of Minnesota require significant community engagement.

Community Engagement Scholars Program

This undergraduate program sponsored by the Career & Community Learning Center is built around community involvement. Requirements include 400 hours of community engagement addressing social issues and community needs, plus related coursework, written reflections, and an integrative community engagement project (ICEP) and seminar.

You must have at least four semesters of studies remaining at the time you apply for admission. Students who successfully complete the program receive a certificate of recognition from the University of Minnesota, a transcript notation, acknowledgement in the commencement program, a medal of distinction to be worn at commencement, and they attend a special recognition reception honoring Community Engagement Scholars.

Leadership Minor

This undergraduate minor—a product of collaboration among the College of Education and Human Development, the Humphrey Institute of Public Affairs, and the Office for Student Affairs—combines leadership-related coursework  with leadership experience in the community.

Social Justice Minor

Offered by the School of Social Work, this minor offers undergraduate students the opportunity both to theorize about the meanings of social justice and to practice "doing" social justice advocacy in community organizations. Each core course in the minor requires 30 hours community-based learning with select Twin Cities-based social justice organizations.
