Internship overview

The Learning Abroad Center is pleased to announce the Global Ambassador Internship, which is designed exclusively for learning abroad alumni in order to spread the word about international experiences and broaden the number of students going abroad through one of the most recent and enthusiastic experts—YOU!

By participating in the Global Ambassadors Internship you will not only contribute to the growth of international education, but also develop yourself professionally and personally through various activities that help you stay connected to your experience and plan the next one.

This unpaid internship will allow you to:

• Build your resume
• Share your experiences with fellow students
• Enhance your interpersonal skills
• Gain experience in the Education Abroad field

After completing various internship activities, the Learning Abroad Center will reward you for your participation with a letter of recommendation and a re-entry gift. Students are also welcome to do an informational interview with someone in the Learning Abroad Center (this is great especially if you are interested in getting into the field).

Internship Activities

Activities can be completed at your own pace throughout the academic year. You are free to suggest other activities you wish to participate in for consideration by the Global Ambassador program. Download the checklist of activities.

Required for all participants:

• Attend the fall training at the beginning of the academic year (Friday, September 18, 2009, 3–4:30 p.m. at the University International Center–Assembly Room 101)
• Be listed as a past participant on the Learning Abroad Center's website
• Attend two Learning Abroad Center pre-departure orientations
• Attend the spring celebration at the end of the academic year (Friday, May 7, 2010, 3–4:30 p.m. at the University International Center–Assembly Room 101)
• Submit an online evaluation of the internship

Select a total of five activities from the following categories:

Promote Study Abroad in Person

• Participate in the Fall Fair (Tuesday, September 22, 2009)
• Participate in International Education Week (November 16–20, 2009)
• Attend an additional pre-departure orientation
• Participate on student panels in department or college activities
• Attend Classroom Visit Internship training and complete 15 classroom visits (counts as two activities)

Personal and Professional Development

• Attend the Minnesota Re-entry Conference (Saturday, September 19, 2009)
• Plan and lead a Global Ambassadors monthly meeting
• Visit Career Services to learn how to incorporate your experience into your resume and interview preparation
• Attend a Market Your Experience Abroad workshop

Share Resources and Advice

• Provide photos to be used for the web and other promotional materials
• Provide a student profile for the Learning Abroad Center web site
• Review web and printed materials for the program you participated in and suggest edits
• Complete a personal Day in the Life profile for the program you participated in

Connect with the International Community

• Join a Cross-Cultural Discussion Group (semester-long program)
• Become an International Buddy to incoming international students
• Assist with an International Buddy Program event: Halloween Party, Thanksgiving Dinner, etc.
• Assist at Small World Coffee Hour with marketing, welcoming, and demonstrations
